Growers in the Idaho and Eastern Oregon growing area produce large yellow, red, and white varieties of Spanish onions, and these onions are grown under ideal growing conditions. The rich volcanic soil, long warm days, cool nights, and an abundant water supply make this area an excellent area to grow onions. Idaho and Eastern Oregon is one of the largest growing areas in the United States. Harvest begins in August with export quality onions available in September. Onions grown in this region are grown under Federal Marketing Order #958; the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Federal Marketing Order Committee sets grade and quality standards that exceed USDA requirements. Many of Idaho Oregon Onion shippers and growers are third and fourth generation family farmers, so there are years of knowledge about growing and shipping onions in the Idaho and E. Oregon Onion region.
